Kericho — A grade six candidate participating in the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) from Kerego Primary School in Kericho County delivered a baby boy on the day of her examination.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kericho County Director of Education, the student gave birth shortly after the national examinations commenced. She was then taken to Kericho County Referral Hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition and able to complete her exams from a maternity hospital bed.
In a separate incident on the same day, a standard 8 candidate from Kimugu Primary School sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination at Central Hospital in Kericho after undergoing leg surgery, Ngoneshi informed the Kenya News Agency. Another KCPE candidate from Kitui took his exams at a Kericho rehabilitation center.
Ngoneshi also provided data on the ongoing examinations in the county. A total of 35,273 candidates are taking the KCPE exams: 29,823 from public schools and 5,054 from private schools. The gender breakdown is 15,410 boys and 14,412 girls from public schools, and 2,588 boys and 2,861 girls from private schools. The exams are being administered at 745 centers across the county, including one adult center and two centers at Kericho GK Prison, where 39 inmates—37 males and two females—are also participating.
For the KPSEA, 21,382 grade 6 candidates from public schools are taking the exam, split between 11,125 boys and 10,262 girls. Private schools account for 5,202 candidates, comprising 2,699 boys and 2,503 girls. The exams are being held at 793 centers throughout the county.
Ngoneshi added that there are also 18 grade 3 candidates in Kericho County sitting for the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA). These candidates are taking the exam at a single center in Kipkelion and consist of six boys and 12 girls.
