Kericho: The upgrading of Kerenga Airstrip in Kericho County has reached 15 percent completion, marking a significant milestone in the national government's initiative to modernize regional aviation infrastructure, enhance air safety, and unlock economic growth. The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is spearheading this project, aiming to meet full bituminous standards ahead of its scheduled completion in May 2026.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Kerenga Airstrip, located in Kapsuser Ward, Belgut Sub-County, is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade from a gravel surface to full bituminous standards. The project includes extending the runway from one kilometer to 1.2 kilometers, widening it to 23 meters, constructing an apron and two taxiways, installing a perimeter fence, and developing a mini control tower alongside administrative offices.
The progress of the project was highlighted during an inspection tour by the Kenya Airports Authority Board of Directors and senior management, led by Chairperson Caleb Kositany. The team not only assessed the ongoing works but also reaffirmed their commitment to modernizing regional aviation infrastructure and enhancing connectivity across the country.
Kositany was joined by Board Director Eng. Walter Ogola, Acting Managing Director Dr. Mohamud Gedi, General Manager for Engineering and Projects Eng. Meshack Ochieng, General Manager for Procurement and Logistics Vincent Korir, Western Region Airport Manager Felix Wanga, and Engineering Projects Manager Eng. Samuel Mochache. This inspection was part of a two-day nationwide tour by KAA to evaluate aerodromes and airstrips currently under rehabilitation.
The delegation was hosted by Roads and Public Works County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Charles Birech, who emphasized the strong collaboration between national and county governments in delivering strategic infrastructure projects. Birech articulated that the ongoing construction of a 1.2-kilometer runway, a mini control tower, and anchor administrative offices aims to transform Kerenga Airstrip into a fully functional regional aviation hub, enhancing safety, improving access for passengers and cargo, and boosting economic activity across Kericho County and the wider South Rift region.
"The Kerenga Airstrip upgrade is a transformative investment that will position Kericho County as a strategic aviation hub while supporting farmers, investors, and tourists through improved access," Birech stated.
