Kenya’s Government Intensifies Efforts to Prevent Flood-Related Deaths

Masinga – From Masinga Dam, Interior and National Administration CS Prof Kithure Kindiki led a high-level government delegation to assess flood risks following the overflow of the Seven Forks dams. Kindiki, addressing the media, emphasized the government’s commitment to proactive measures to prevent further fatalities from El Nino rains-related flooding, which has already claimed 142 lives.

According to Kenya News Agency, with the impending rainy season expected in a week to ten days, there is a likelihood of the five dams reaching full capacity and spilling over. This situation poses a threat to communities in Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Garissa, and Tana River counties. He highlighted the government’s efforts to support flood-displaced communities, including the mobilization of several aircraft to deliver essential supplies such as medicines and food to flood-stricken areas. Additionally, the Ministry of Transport has been instrumental in reopening several roads that were previously inaccessible due to flooding.

Kindiki expressed regret over the loss of lives, which he attributed to the disregard of warnings against wading or driving through flooded rivers. He emphasized the importance of patience and adherence to safety guidelines among residents in the affected areas. Kindiki also called on motorists to comply with the directives issued by local transport authorities to ensure safety and mitigate the impact of the floods.
