Kenya’s Ambitious 15-Billion Tree Campaign Makes Progress, CS Mvurya Reports

KIPINI, TANA DELTA SUB-COUNTY — Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, announced that Kenya is on track with its ambitious initiative to plant 15 billion trees by 2032, a major effort aimed at combating climate change. Mvurya spoke during an event where 60,000 mangrove seedlings were planted in Kipini, emphasizing the critical environmental and protective roles these mangroves play.

According to Kenya News Agency, the mangrove planting not only contributes to the national tree planting goal but also specifically addresses local environmental issues such as flooding in the Tana Delta area. "The tree planting exercise is a big step in achieving our set targets towards curbing the adverse effects of climate change," he stated, highlighting the specific benefits of mangroves in flood prevention and ecological balance.

Additionally, Mvurya detailed upcoming economic developments for the region, including the construction of a new fish landing site in Kipini intended to boost the local fishing industry. He announced, "Before the end of this month, we want to come and launch the construction of the fish landing site here. On the same day, we will also disburse Sh206 million to fisherfolk groups in the area." This investment is part of a broader initiative to enhance maritime and fishing activities, providing local fishermen with 150 boats and offering specialized training to 150 youths in the county to become coxswains.

The event also touched on the broader social challenges, particularly the local use of Muguka, a stimulant whose consumption Mvurya criticized. He called for stricter regulations comparable to those used to combat illicit brews and hard drugs, reflecting a comprehensive approach to community health and safety.

The mangrove planting event saw wide participation, including Tana River Governor Major (Rtd) Dhadho Gaddae Godhana, Deputy Governor Mahat Ali Loka, Senator Danson Buya Mungatana, and Kipini MCA Abubakar Mohamed Athman, along with Maritime Affairs and Shipping PS Geoffrey Kaituko and other senior officials. This high-profile participation underscores the government's commitment to environmental sustainability and community development in the region.
