Kenyans Encouraged to Plant Trees in National Effort Against Climate Change

In Makueni, Kenya, Devolution Principal Secretary Teresia Mbaika has called on citizens to actively participate in tree planting efforts as part of the government’s ambitious goal to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. This initiative is a crucial step in addressing the growing concerns of climate change in the country.

According to Kenya News Agency, the government’s tree planting agenda is designed to combat the detrimental effects of global warming, including the persistent issues of drought and floods that have been plaguing various regions of Kenya. She made these remarks in Mukuyuni, Kaiti Constituency, during an event where she distributed 10,000 tree seedlings to various groups and individuals for planting in the area. Additionally, she announced that an extra 5,000 tree seedlings would be distributed through the support of environmental friends.

“Climate change is real, and its impact is evident through the changing rainfall patterns. Therefore, I urge Kenyans to plant and nurture trees to address environmental challenges that are affecting our daily livelihoods,” Mbaika stated. She stressed the collective responsibility of every individual in contributing to tree planting and growth, as the effects of climate change are universal.

Mbaika also took the opportunity to remind Kenyans of the upcoming National tree-growing exercise holiday on Monday, urging them to participate actively in the tree planting activities. The Principal Secretary, along with staff members from her department, led by example by planting trees at Ukia Primary School in the area.

In a significant development, President Dr. William Ruto is set to launch an accelerated campaign towards growing 15 billion trees by 2032 at Kiu Wetland in Makindu, Makueni County. This initiative is expected to see the planting of at least 100 million seedlings across the country during the exercise, marking a major step in Kenya’s efforts to combat climate change and its effects.
