NAIROBI – Kaiti Member of Parliament Joshua Kimilu is preparing to introduce legislation in the Kenyan Parliament aimed at establishing an emergency fund within the National Government Constituency Fund (NG-CDF). This initiative seeks to provide financial resources for addressing disasters impacting citizens, such as the ongoing heavy rains in various parts of the country.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kimilu discussed the proposed bill while distributing relief supplies at the Kya Kituku Evacuation Centre in Kilungu Sub County. The centre currently shelters over 405 individuals displaced by the El Nino rains in Makueni County. “We intend to propose a bill that permits the use of a portion of the NG-CDF allocation for aiding people driven out of their homes by disasters,” Kimilu stated during his address to the media.
The MP provided essential goods like maize flour, sugar, rice, salt, tea leaves, vegetables, bar soaps, and cooking oil to the affected families. He also committed to replacing window panes in the classrooms being used as shelters to reduce the cold experienced by the evacuees.
The majority of the displaced families come from Kyang’aa and Mutuyu villages in Kilungu Ward, and Itaa village in Ilima Ward. Kimilu further visited the Katulye Evacuation Camp, where he extended similar assistance to families affected by the floods.
Kimilu emphasized the importance of vigilance during the rainy season and warned residents about the dangers of crossing flooded rivers. He highlighted the loss of five lives in his constituency due to the floods, which also caused significant property damage. “I urge residents, especially those in areas prone to mudslides, to relocate to safer locations or designated camps,” he added.
