Kenyan Carpenter Wairimu Wachira Breaks Gender Barriers, Thrives in Male-Dominated Field

GILGIL, NAKURU COUNTY – Wairimu Wachira, a 28-year-old carpenter from Gilgil, Nakuru County, is challenging gender stereotypes by succeeding in the traditionally male-dominated field of carpentry. Despite facing significant hurdles, Wachira earns more than Sh5,000 weekly by crafting furniture, wall units, and cabinets.

According to Kenya News Agency, her journey into carpentry began after working in the pastry and tailoring industries. The transition was not easy; she faced rejection and resistance due to her gender when seeking mentorship in carpentry. Her persistence led her to the KCB Foundation 2jiajiri scholarship program in 2022, which provided her with a three-month carpentry course at Comboni Polytechnic. Even in the classroom, she was often encouraged to switch to more traditional female roles but remained steadfast.

Despite initial difficulties in mastering the tools and techniques of carpentry, Wairimu persevered. After her scholarship, she volunteered in various workshops to gain experience. Today, she works at a local furniture workshop, where she is recognized for her skill and dedication. Wairimu’s current project involves a contract that could earn her more than Sh100,000 weekly.

Wairimu’s motivation comes from her desire to excel in her craft and provide the best for her customers. She also draws support from her family and her husband, who backs her career choice. Safety remains a concern for her, especially when visiting male customers’ homes, as she has to be cautious of their intentions.

Wairimu dreams of owning a large workshop and employing other creative, hardworking women in carpentry. She also engages in community activities, helping young single mothers in the Langalanga area through a Community Based Organization (CBO) founded with her mother.

Her advice to young women interested in traditionally male careers is to remain patient, focused, and let their skills speak for themselves. Wairimu believes that with determination, women can excel in any field, challenging the status quo and redefining societal roles.
