Kenya U18 Team Dominates Sudan in CECAFA Tournament Opener

Kisumu, Kenya: The Harambee Stars under-18 boys’ team made an impressive start in the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) tournament, securing a resounding 5-0 victory over Sudan.

According to Kenya News Agency, In the match held at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, Kisumu, on Saturday, Kenya set the pace early in the game. US-based striker Louis Ingavi opened the scoring in the 10th minute, capitalizing on a dynamic play near the opponent’s goal. The team’s momentum was further boosted by Tyron Kariuki, who doubled the lead in the 18th minute with a well-executed strike.

The Kenyan team’s relentless effort continued, leading to a third goal in the 35th minute by Spanish-based Captain Adrine Kibet. Ingavi then scored his second goal, concluding the first half with a commanding 4-0 lead. The match, played under rainy conditions, saw the Sudanese team struggle to counter the hosts’ offensive, managing only a few attempts on target.

In a dramatic finish, Eddy Owanda scored the fifth and final goal in the 90th minute, following a pass from Duncan Omalla. The Junior Stars’ coach, Salim Babu, praised his team’s performance, attributing their success to thorough preparations and support from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). “We have trained our sights on winning these Group stage matches and become number one,” Babu stated, expressing confidence in their strategy for upcoming matches.

Babu also noted their tactic of scoring early goals to gain an advantage over their opponents. Kenya is set to face Rwanda in their next match on Tuesday, November 28, at the same venue. Rwanda, considered a top contender, narrowly defeated Somalia 1-0 in their opening game, with Sibomana Sitamba scoring the only goal in the second half. Despite being reduced to ten men, Rwanda managed to maintain their lead against Somalia.

The matches were attended by notable figures, including Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, FKF President Nick Mwendwa, CECAFA officials, and other distinguished guests.
