Malaba OSBP: The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has inaugurated a new service centre at the Malaba One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) as part of its service week activities. This initiative aims to enhance trade efficiency and expand revenue collection by integrating all partner government agencies under one roof. The centre is designed to streamline the clearance process, reduce traffic congestion, and combat revenue losses caused by smuggling and corruption.
According to Kenya News Agency, the new service facility at Malaba OSBP is expected to significantly reduce the time required for clearing goods and people across the border. This efficiency is anticipated to mitigate the impacts of smuggling and bribery, which have been major issues at this border post. KRA’s Deputy Commissioner of Border Control and Enforcement, Macharia, emphasized that the integrated service model would foster better cooperation among government departments, thus speeding up transactions and reducing operational delays.
Macharia stated th
at with the operationalization of this service centre, KRA projects an 80% increase in revenue collection from the Malaba border post in the coming financial year. He highlighted the critical role of the centre in transforming public service delivery by establishing a more citizen-centric approach, which will not only improve the effectiveness of services but also enhance the overall business climate in the region.
The centre is also part of KRA’s broader mandate which includes trade facilitation, border control, and national security. Macharia noted the importance of educating and training local traders and social groups to help curb smuggling activities. He also warned customs officials involved in corrupt practices and theft that strict measures and surveillance are now in place to tackle these issues.
Additionally, the Deputy Commissioner of Marketing and Communication, Grace Wandera, reassured that the concerns raised by truck drivers and cross-border traders regarding security and operational efficien
cy are being addressed. In a gesture of appreciation, KRA officials provided over 200 truck drivers with refreshments, acknowledging their crucial role in the partnership.
The Malaba OSBP handles approximately 2,000 trucks daily and is a key contributor to regional and international trade. With the establishment of the new service centre, the KRA is optimistic about achieving its ambitious revenue target of over 10 billion per year, enhancing both local and international trade engagements.
