Kenya Mourns the Loss of General Francis Ogolla in State Funeral

NGIYA – The community and nation came together to say their final goodbyes to General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of Defence Forces, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash. His body was brought to his rural home in Ngiya, Siaya County, where final rites are to be held following a state funeral.

According to Kenya News Agency, the late General Ogolla’s journey included a memorial service at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, led by President William Ruto, before being flown to Kisumu and then to his hometown. The requiem mass is scheduled at Senator Obama K’Ogello Primary School in Ngi’ya. General Ogolla and nine other military officers perished on Thursday, April 18, 2024, near Sindar, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, during a mission in the North Rift.

President Ruto, at the memorial service, underscored General Ogolla’s significant contributions to modernizing Kenya’s military and safeguarding service members. “His vision for a transformed military was profound, aiming for better equipment and greater safety in operations,” stated Ruto. The President assured ongoing government support for the General’s family and recognized his noble service and dedication to the country.

General Ogolla’s legacy includes initiatives to improve military welfare and operations, as noted by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who called the General a defender of national peace and security.
