Kenya Meteorological Department Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert

NAIROBI: The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning, anticipating heavy rainfall across multiple regions, with potential flood risks in the forthcoming days.

According to Kenya News Agency, a circular released on Wednesday alerts the public to an intensification of ongoing heavy rains, which are expected to spread from the northeastern, northwestern, and central highlands to Nairobi, the southeastern lowlands, the western sector, and the coastal areas, including Kilifi County, starting Thursday, November 2. The department forecasts a decrease in the intensity of the rains from Monday, November 6, particularly over the southeastern lowlands and parts of the northeast, although gusty winds are likely to persist.

The weatherman advises residents in the affected areas to take precautionary measures, such as avoiding driving or walking through moving water, steering clear of open fields during the rains, and seeking appropriate shelter to reduce the risk of lightning strikes. The public has also been warned about the potential damage from strong winds, such as the loss of roofs and uprooting of trees. Those residing in landslide-prone areas, especially around the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, Mt. Kenya, and hilly western regions, have been urged to remain alert.

The Met Department has committed to providing updates should there be any significant changes in the weather conditions.
