Kenya Launches Curriculum-Based Education in TVET Institutions

Meru: Meru National Polytechnic recently hosted a significant event where the Ministry of Education announced the readiness for the implementation of Curriculum-Based Education and Training (CBET) across Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions in Kenya. The event focused on training principals from the Mount Kenya region on evaluating the implementation of CBET.



According to Kenya News Agency, the innovative CBET model has been adopted by TVET institutions nationwide, with learning centers in the Mountain region already implementing it. Dr. Muoria emphasized the importance of evaluating the new training program’s implementation to ensure its effectiveness. She expressed satisfaction with the program’s integration into the institutions and the ongoing evaluation to address any emerging issues.



Dr. Muoria highlighted the collaborative efforts in reshaping the curriculum with the Curriculum Development Assessment Certification Council (CDACC) to align it with skills training. She also mentioned the retooling of trainers as a crucial step in the successful rollout of the CBET program. This retooling initiative, supported by the Government of Kenya and the Kenya School of TVETS, has already seen the training of 3200 trainers from national polytechnics, with an additional 2900 trainers from new polytechnics underway.



The PS added that the department has partnered with three Canadian college teams experienced in the CBET system, providing technical expertise and funding. She addressed the equipment availability in institutions, noting that while most are well-equipped, especially the newer ones, there are still a few that need improvements. The government is actively working on providing the necessary tools to these institutions, with 70 of them currently in the process of acquiring new equipment.



Dr. Muoria also spoke about the integration of TVET training with local industries, allowing institutions to practically use industry equipment. This linkage not only enhances the training but also bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
