Kenya Gears Up for CHAN Tournament to Boost Economy

Nairobi: As Kenya prepares to co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) next month, the government is focusing on leveraging the tournament to benefit various sectors of the Kenyan economy.



According to Kenya News Agency, officials are urging Kenyans to support the national team, Harambee Stars, as a demonstration of national pride and unity. CHAN, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), aims to provide local talent with exposure and experience, potentially advancing the country’s football development.



Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, during the CHAN National Committee meeting at Talanta Plaza, Nairobi, confirmed CAF’s approval for Kenya to host the tournament. He emphasized the economic benefits of hosting a successful event, highlighting increased sports tourism and the resulting positive impact on local businesses, hotels, and job creation in hospitality and transportation sectors.



Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa described the event as historic for Kenya, emphasizing the readiness of hotels to accommodate visitors and the coordination with other government departments to ensure a warm welcome for all attendees. Tourist attractions across Kenya will also offer special programs to enhance the visitor experience.



East African Community Principal Secretary Dr. Caroline Karugu pointed out the event’s significance for regional integration, expressing excitement for hosting the tournament in East Africa and ensuring smooth movement between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania for fans and participants.



Broadcasting and Telecommunication Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke, represented by Director of Information and Broadcasting Joseph Kipkoech, assured that Kenya News Agency (KNA) and Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) are prepared to cover the event comprehensively, providing essential content for both local and international audiences.



Cabinet Affairs Principal Secretary Idris Dokota highlighted the opportunity to showcase Kenya’s culture and hospitality during the CHAN tournament, urging Kenyans to attend the matches and support both the national team and other participating African teams.



The meeting was also attended by Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar, President of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Hussein Mohammed, and CHAN Local Organizing Committee Chairman Nicholas Musonye, among other officials.
