Kemi Séba Advocates for Peace Between Benin and Niger Amid Tensions

NIAMEY – Pan-Africanist activist Kemi Séba has called for peace between his home country Benin and Niger, amid escalating tensions related to regional politics and economic sanctions. Séba made the appeal during a Tuesday meeting with Nigerien officials in Niamey, emphasizing the importance of overcoming political conflicts.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Séba expressed his opposition to the current leadership in Benin but stressed the need for peaceful relations between the two nations. He criticized the Beninese government’s support for what he described as France-Africa policies, which he claims undermine regional autonomy. Séba’s remarks came during a visit where he and fellow activist Nathalie Yamb met with Niger’s President General Abdourahamane Tiani, Prime Minister Lamine Zeine, and members of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSD).

The activist highlighted the ongoing resistance in Niger against neocolonial influences, portraying it as a stand for justice that aligns with his advocacy against foreign domination in African politics. This stance comes in the wake of Beninese President Patrice Talon’s controversial measures, including military threats and economic sanctions against Niger, which recently culminated in a temporary blockade of a crucial oil pipeline passing through Benin. Although the blockade has been lifted, Niger continues to keep its borders with Benin closed due to security concerns, contributing to economic strain and rising prices of essentials in Benin.
