Windhoek – The Kavango East Rundu cycling team is gearing up to participate in the 2023 Nedbank Desert Dash, a grueling 397-kilometer cycling event through the Namib Desert, with the aim of raising funds for a charitable cause. The 24-hour cycling challenge, taking place from December 8 to 9, 2023, will start from Grove Mall in Windhoek and finish at Platz Am Meer in Swakopmund.

According to Namibian Press Agency (NAMPA), the team’s participation is driven by their love for cycling and their desire to support vulnerable communities. Their goal for this race is to raise funds and awareness for Embo lye Haro Pre-Primary School in Ndama, Rundu. This school serves a vital role in the community by providing education and shelter for orphaned children.

Izak Grobbelaar, a member of the cycling team, revealed in the statement that while cycling has been a part-time hobby for them, their involvement in the Nedbank Desert Dash has led to increased training efforts. Despite challenges in finding time for training, the team has been actively participating in various cycling events throughout the year to prepare for the race.

Grobbelaar also highlighted the financial challenges the team faced, including travel costs and bike maintenance. Thanks to the sponsorship from Nedbank, the team can now direct all raised funds towards supporting the school and its associated bike shop. He expressed gratitude for the support from Nedbank Namibia and encouraged others to contribute to their cause, emphasizing that any amount of support is welcome and will significantly impact the lives of those in need at Embo lye Haro Pre-Primary School.
