Keetmanshoop: Kavango East successfully retained the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup netball title on Monday after defeating Khomas Region 35-28 in a closely contested final at the Westdene Stadium in Keetmanshoop. The defending champions, who won the title in Outjo in 2025, delivered a composed performance to secure back-to-back victories in the 24th edition of the tournament.

According to Namibia Press Agency, having lost to Khomas in the group stages on Sunday, Kavango East entered the final with renewed determination and a revised game plan. In a repeat of last year's final, Kavango East again rose to the occasion, producing a disciplined display in front of an enthusiastic crowd and government officials.

They made a strong start, taking a narrow 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Their momentum continued in the second quarter as they extended the advantage to 18-14 by halftime. After the break, Kavango East maintained control of the contest, outscoring Khomas 10-8 in the third quarter to open up a 28-22 lead.

Both teams committed several errors in the final quarter, including offsides and misplaced passes, but Kavango East capitalised on key turnovers and added seven goals to Khomas' six to seal the 35-28 victory. Their disciplined approach and ability to dictate the tempo of the match proved decisive.

Kavango East's Esther Kapinga was named Player of the Match for her standout performance. This year's tournament, hosted in the ||Kharas Region, attracted more than 600 young athletes competing in football and netball. Since its inception in 2001, the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup has remained a key platform for youth sports development in Namibia, offering young athletes a pathway from grassroots participation to national recognition.
