Katwitwi Settlement to Receive 25 New Houses Under Build Together Programme

Katwitwi: The Katwitwi settlement in the Mpungu Constituency, located within the Kavango West Region, is set to benefit from the construction of 25 new houses through the Build Together programme. This initiative is part of the current regional budget, and three contractors have already commenced work on the site. According to Namibia Press Agency, Kavango West Regional Council Chief Regional Officer, Matheus Singambwe, stated in an interview that the project is being financed by the Trust Fund of Namibia. The fund has allocated N.dollars 20 million specifically for the Build Together programme in Katwitwi. The programme is part of the region's capital priorities, aimed at alleviating congestion in Nkurenkuru and enhancing living conditions in the Katwitwi area. Singambwe highlighted the longstanding need for formal housing in the settlement, which led the council to compensate residents to facilitate the construction works. He confirmed that three contractors are actively engaged in building approximately 25 houses in the area, an initiative that is crucial for the regional development strategy. The funding from the Trust Fund allows the council to move forward with the project despite general budget constraints. The initiative was prioritized based on community needs and its potential to directly improve local livelihoods. The new houses are expected to provide dignity, security, and stability for low-income families, while also supporting local employment opportunities during the construction phase. The housing project is part of broader efforts to upgrade settlements, reduce reliance on rented accommodation, and improve access to essential services such as water and roads. Additionally, it aims to stimulate small business activities as more families formally settle in the Katwitwi area. Singambwe noted that monitoring of the project is carried out through the council's development planning structures, with technical teams verifying construction phases prior to payment. The region is committed to complet ing priority projects efficiently, with the Build Together programme complementing other initiatives designed to enhance services and create opportunities, particularly for youth and vulnerable households. In his remarks, Singambwe emphasized the region's goal of improving living standards and fostering safer communities. Looking forward, the priorities for the 2026/2027 financial year include completing key projects and enhancing revenue sources.
