Katutura’s Transformation Is Attracting Investors: Nandi Ndaitwah

Katutura: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Friday said Katutura's transformation from a symbol of apartheid-era exclusion into a thriving centre of economic activity is attracting investment and creating opportunities for residents. Speaking at the official inauguration of Goreangab Mall in Katutura, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the development demonstrates how historically disadvantaged communities can become attractive destinations for private-sector investment.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Nandi-Ndaitwah commended the investors for choosing Katutura, saying the area had been overlooked for many years despite its economic potential. "It is with great admiration that I would like to thank the investors for having chosen Katutura to invest in. This was great and well thought out because it has been isolated for too long," she said.

The President reflected on the history of Katutura, which was established during apartheid after Black Namibians were forcibly removed from areas closer to the city centre. She said that despite its painful origins, residents transformed the area into a place of resilience, entrepreneurship, and community pride. "Today, Katutura stands not only as a symbol of division, which was intended, but as a symbol of progress, dignity and strength for our people," she said.

According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, the opening of the mall represents more than commercial development, as it reverses the legacy of exclusion by bringing services and opportunities closer to residents. She noted that the project created more than 300 jobs during construction and over 400 permanent jobs upon completion, making it an important contributor to government's efforts to reduce unemployment. "A community that was once created through forced removal is today attracting investment, creating jobs and shaping its own economic future. That is the story of resilience, progress and transformation," she said.

The President further encouraged investors to look beyond traditional commercial centres and explore opportunities in communities with untapped economic potential. She said developments such as Goreangab Mall reduce transport costs for residents, improve access to services, and inspire young people by exposing them to business opportunities and career prospects. The mall was developed through a partnership between Oryx Properties and Safland Property Group.
