Katima Mulilo Mayor Honors Nurses’ Dedication on International Nurses Day

Swakopmund: Katima Mulilo Mayor Kabende Kabende has said nursing is a calling built on humanity, compassion and service. Kabende made the remarks during International Nurses Day celebrations held at the Katima Mulilo Open Market on Tuesday under the theme, 'Our Nurses. Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives.' He said the town joined the rest of the world in celebrating both a profession and a calling.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Kabende emphasized that nursing is not simply a career built on medical knowledge and technical skills, but is fundamentally rooted in humanity. "Every day, nurses become a source of comfort for the frightened, hope for the sick, strength for families and healing for communities," he stated. Kabende highlighted the crucial role nurses play during life's most precious and challenging moments, such as when newborns take their first breath, and when lives are saved and dignity restored.

Kabende also acknowledged the extraordinary courage nurses have demonstrated in recent years by working long hours under emotional exhaustion and overwhelming challenges, all while maintaining resilience and professionalism. "Their commitment reminded us that healthcare is not only about medicine, it is about people caring for people," he said.

He urged the public to support nurses not only through appreciation but also by ensuring they have adequate resources, opportunities for growth, safe working environments, and recognition of their vital role, including those who have retired. "May you continue to inspire hope, healing and humanity wherever you serve," Kabende added.

At the same event, Enkehaus Private Hospital registered assistant nurse manager Naume Joram stated that International Nurses Day is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the men and women who serve at the heart of healthcare. She recognized the long hours and immense pressure nurses face, yet acknowledged their continuous dedication to serve with compassion, professionalism, resilience, and dedication. "Nurses are not simply healthcare workers; they are healers, caregivers, educators, advocates, and leaders," Joram said, emphasizing that nurses remain the backbone of healthcare delivery.

Retired nurse Irene Sezuni, with 34 years of experience, also delivered motivational remarks to nurses and student nurses. International Nurses Day is commemorated globally on 12 May, and as part of the celebration, nurses in Katima Mulilo marched from the Zambezi Regional Council offices to the Katima Mulilo Open Market.
