Kathu FCS Unit secures gender-based violence and femicide convictions

The SAPS management welcomes the various Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) convictions recently achieved by the Kathu SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses unit in the Kathu Regional Court.

On 16 August 2018 at about 05:00 a 38-year-old uncle raped his niece aged 27, while she was sleeping.

He was arrested and received 10 years’ direct imprisonment for rape on 29 June 2023.

A 44-year-old domestic worker was arrested on 14 October 2022, after she assaulted a four-year-old toddler in her care.

The mother noticed the bruises and reported the matter. The accused pleaded guilty and was recently sentenced for child abuse and assault. Maphefo Segonetse received two years’ imprisonment suspended for five years’.

Omphemetse Monnagaadise (32) was sentenced to three years’ wholly suspended for five years’ for sexual assault.

On 24 December 2022 the accused touched the 16 year old female inappropriately and was arrested. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced recently.

In another separate incident a mother (34) was sentenced to 2 years’ imprisonment suspended for 3 years’ for exposing and neglecting an infant.

On 10 April 2023 the mother left her 2 week old baby next to the N14 road and the child was discovered by a passer-by who reported the matter to the police. The mother was traced, arrested and she pleaded guilty and was sentenced.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola commended the respective investigating officers and appreciated their efforts in bringing the perpetrators of GBVF to book, namely Detective Constable Rapelang, Detective Constable Mokomele and Detective Constable Pilane from the Kathu FCS unit and also for their assertiveness in the investigations that led to the outstanding sentences handed down for crimes against women and children.
