Karuli Misses 200m Finals at Paris 2024 Paralympic Games

PARIS — Paralympic sprinter Petrus Karuli missed a spot in the men's T37 200 meters finals at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, after finishing last in the first heat. Despite a strong seasonal best of 25.24 seconds, Karuli did not advance. The event was marked by stiff competition with Indonesia's Saptoyogo Purnomo leading the heat.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Karuli, participating in his first Paralympics, tackled three events. He started with the 100m, followed by a disqualification in the 400m for a lane infringement, and concluded with the 200m. Indonesia's Purnomo topped the heat with a time of 23.41 seconds, closely followed by Saudi Arabia's Ali Alnakhli and Poland's Michal Kotkowski, who clocked 23.43 seconds and 23.51 seconds, respectively.

This year, Team Namibia's hopes are also pinned on T11 sprinter Lahja Ishitile and her guide Sem Shimanda, who are scheduled to compete in the women's T11 200m finals. Ishitile and Shimanda, who have already secured a gold medal for Namibia at this championship, will race on Saturday evening. Team Namibia is aiming to build on its success from the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, where it won a silver and a bronze.
