Kapenguria: Kapenguria Member of Parliament (MP) Hon. Samuel Moroto officially launched the 2025 Kapenguria Constituency Bursary Program at Kamito Girls High School. The MP, who presented a cheque worth Sh58 million to school principals and students while parents and the local residents looked on, emphasized that the bursary program is designed to ensure inclusive and equitable access to education across all levels, from basic to tertiary learning.

According to Kenya News Agency, Hon. Moroto noted that education is the foundation for development and transformation in marginalized communities and a significant step toward uplifting living standards in the region. ‘Today marks a critical milestone in our journey to bridge the education gap,’ said Hon. Moroto. ‘Through this bursary, we aim to ease the financial burden faced by many parents and guarantee that no child will be left behind because of school fees.’

He also promised to have a serious meeting with education stakeholders on the issue of student strikes, which has become rampant in the recent past within the county, and urged parents to visit his offices and discuss matters of education. Hon. Moroto was accompanied by West Pokot County Senator Hon. Julius Murgor and Sigor Member of Parliament (MP) Hon. Peter Lochakapong, among other leaders who were present to witness the presentation.

Senator Julius Murgor lauded the initiative and emphasized the importance of collaborative leadership in advancing education in West Pokot. He challenged other constituencies to emulate the efforts seen in Kapenguria and called for increased investment in learning institutions. ‘When leaders come together with a shared vision, communities thrive,’ said Senator Murgor. ‘This bursary is not just a cheque – it is hope, opportunity, and a lifeline for our children. Let us continue supporting such noble causes.’

Echoing the same sentiments, Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong praised Kamito Girls for its exemplary academic record and thanked the school for hosting the event. ‘This school is a beacon of excellence in West Pokot,’ said Hon. Lochakapong. ‘By supporting our girls and ensuring they stay in school, we are building a strong, educated, and empowered generation of women leaders.’

Sister Francisca Piku, the principal of Kamito Girls, expressed gratitude to the leaders and acknowledged the timely nature of the bursary program. ‘Many of our students come from humble backgrounds. This bursary will go a long way in keeping them in class and focused on their studies,’ she said. ‘We are honored to host this important launch and to be part of the change we all wish to see.’

The event featured performances from the students, including poems and songs emphasizing the value of education, especially for the girl child. Parents and guardians who were in attendance expressed appreciation to the leaders, noting that the bursary would relieve them of the pressure to raise school fees amid tough economic times. The students, who are the sole beneficiaries, were happy and grateful for the bursary as they can now focus on their studies without worrying about being sent home for fees.

The leaders planted commemorative trees on the school grounds as a symbol of growth and sustainability, pledging continued support to the education sector.
