Kantchari Residents Rally for Military Support and Essential Supplies Amid Security Concerns

TAPOA PROVINCE — In the early hours of April 6, 2024, the residents of Kantchari, located 156 kilometers from Fada N’Gourma and close to the Niger border, took to the streets to demand urgent provisions for their community and the establishment of a Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR).

According to Burkina Information Agency, the local population is pressing for the operationalization of the newly created intervention unit, believing it will be pivotal in combating terrorist threats and securing major roadways for safer, convoy-free supply deliveries to the city.

The demonstrators emphasized the significance of the BIR, established in January 2024, in their fight against the encircling terrorist presence, which they believe will not only help in repelling attackers but also ensure the liberation of key transport routes. The urgency of this request stems from the need to normalize traffic and supply chains that have been severely disrupted due to ongoing security concerns.

In addition to their call for military support, the residents of Kantchari are also facing a humanitarian crisis, compelling them to issue a desperate plea to the Transitional government for immediate resupply of essential goods to their area. Beyond the immediate need for security reinforcements and supplies, the demonstrators are also advocating for the restoration of electricity and mobile telephone networks, which are critical for the normalcy and well-being of the community.
