KIAMBUI COUNTY – The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) is spearheading a technological revolution in agriculture with the introduction of smart greenhouses aimed at enhancing farm productivity across the nation. During a week-long educational campaign conducted across its agricultural centers, KALRO showcased these new innovations to farmers, aligning with the onset of the planting season.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Director for Seed Propagation at Muguga Genetic Resources Research Institute in Kiambu County, the smart greenhouse system integrates the Internet of Things (IoT) technology to optimize agricultural operations. Ochieng emphasized that approximately 70% of the greenhouse functions, including climate control and irrigation, can be managed remotely via mobile phones. This system incorporates various sensors for monitoring soil moisture, plant humidity, and irrigation needs, facilitating data transmission and alerts through a cloud-based platform for effective remote oversight.

Ochieng detailed the greenhouse’s cooling mechanism, which employs mobile-controlled misting to maintain optimal conditions for crop growth during hot weather. Additionally, the greenhouse uses a button drip irrigation system that is both water-efficient and low maintenance, reducing operational costs for farmers. The system alerts farmers to soil dryness, enabling timely water release to the crops.

The initiative also focuses on breeding robust crop varieties, such as drought and disease-resistant tomatoes, specifically tailored for Kiambu farmers. The greenhouse currently cultivates a range of crops, including capsicum, spaghetti squash, and strawberries. A notable feature of this advanced system is the use of a feeding tank for liquid fertilizer, which ensures soil nutrient enrichment with user alerts for replenishment.

This innovative project receives support from the Korea-Africa Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (KAFACI) in partnership with KALRO, highlighting a commitment to leveraging technology for agricultural improvement and value addition in Kenya.
