KAKAMEGA, Kenya – Bukhungu Stadium, located in Kakamega County, is set to undergo rapid renovations to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
According to Kenya News Agency, The Governor confirmed that the stadium’s refurbishment is on an accelerated schedule, with completion expected within three months, well ahead of the tournament’s start.
During a recent tour to assess the renovation progress, Governor Barasa revealed that the stadium’s pitch earthworks, carpeting, and drainage systems are currently underway. With Kenya co-hosting the biennial tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the event is seen as a crucial preparatory phase for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Renovations at Bukhungu Stadium include the construction of new stands, VIP and VVIP rooms, doping control room, two changing rooms, additional terraces, a gym, and six more changing rooms. Once completed, the stadium will boast a capacity to accommodate 25,000 fans, making it one of the key venues for the upcoming CHAN tournament.
This development is part of a broader initiative to enhance sports infrastructure in Kenya and the East African region, providing a boost to local economies and showcasing the countries’ readiness to host international sporting events.
