Kajiado County Embarks on Tree Planting Drive to Enhance Forest Cover

KAJIADO, Kenya – In an effort to increase forest cover, national government staff in Kajiado County participated in a tree-planting exercise on Tuesday at the County Commissioner’s compound. Led by County Commissioner Jude Wasonga, the initiative involved planting over 250 tree seedlings of various species.

According to Kenya News Agency, this tree-planting drive aligns with the Kenyan government’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees over the next decade. This initiative aims to increase the country’s tree cover from the current 12 percent to 30 percent by 2032. The move is part of broader efforts to tackle environmental challenges, including climate change.

Jennifer Shisoka, Kajiado County Youth Coordinator, who was also present at the event, highlighted the critical role of trees in restoring biodiversity, improving air quality, and mitigating impacts of climate change like drought. She encouraged the youth to actively participate in environmental conservation by engaging in tree planting and establishing tree nurseries, which can also provide financial independence.

County Civil Registrar of Persons Christine Gachau urged Kenyans to utilize the ongoing rainy season for tree planting and to ensure the nurtured growth of these trees to maturity. This tree planting initiative was launched by President William Ruto in December 2022 and is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reversing deforestation, and restoring 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscape in Kenya.
