Kadiogo High Commissioner Orders Rabies Control Measures in Ouagadougou

OUAGADOUGOU — The High Commissioner of Kadiogo province, Maurice Konaté, has mandated the culling of stray dogs, cats, and monkeys in the Ouidi district of Sector 9, Ouagadougou, following a rabies outbreak. This action is part of a broader series of measures aimed at controlling the spread of the disease, which has been declared in district 2 of the city.

According to Burkina Information Agency, all dogs, cats, and monkeys within the affected area are to be confined for two months, with strays to be euthanized immediately by competent services. Furthermore, the movement of these animals, unless leashed, is banned from June 15 to July 15. The decree also details the impoundment of tagged dogs, which are to be held for 48 hours from the decree’s publication.

Additionally, the decree outlines specific protocols for handling animals that have been bitten. Animals bitten by a confirmed rabid animal are to be euthanized and their bodies properly disposed of, while those up-to-date with their vaccinations are to be revaccinated within seven days and placed under surveillance.

The provincial directorate in charge of animal resources is closely monitoring the situation, and the infected district has been declared a quarantine zone to further prevent the spread of rabies.
