KISUMU: The Kabonyo Kanyagwal fish breeding project, a major investment in Kisumu County, is back on track after experiencing delays. With over Sh 1.5 billion shillings invested by the National Government, the project was initially flagged off by President William Ruto. However, local residents have expressed frustration over the postponed completion.
According to Kenya News Agency, experts overseeing the project, including Rodrick Kundu, acknowledged the setbacks but confirmed that a contractor has been assigned, putting the project back on course. Kundu emphasized the importance of the Kabonyo project, describing it as a transformative initiative for the aquaculture sub-sector. The project, now underway, will be executed in phases, with the initial phase involving the basic development of essential structures.
Kundu explained that the delays stemmed from procedural requirements related to signing agreements and fund disbursement. Despite these challenges, construction has commenced, marking a significant
step forward. The project’s completion is anticipated to revolutionize aquaculture in the region, particularly in fingerling breeding.
The project aims to address critical issues in the sub-sector, including the production of high-quality fish feeds. Kundu expressed confidence that the breeding center would be completed within the stipulated timeline, ultimately benefiting the local community and potentially extending its impact to the entire East African region.
