Migori: Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Chairperson Caleb Kositany has announced that the Lichota Airstrip in Migori will undergo infrastructure improvements costing Sh300 million. Kositany made the announcement during an inspection tour of the airstrip, which is situated along the Migori-Kehancha highway. The project includes the construction of a new terminal and the extension of the runway from 1.2 to 2 kilometers, with a completion deadline set for December this year.
According to Kenya News Agency, once the upgrades are completed, the airstrip's capacity will increase significantly, enabling it to handle up to half a million passengers annually, compared to the current 22,000. The enhancements will also allow the facility to accommodate larger passenger and cargo flights. The expansion is expected to improve passenger experience and service delivery at the airstrip.
The new terminal will support both domestic and regional operations, enhancing Migori Airstrip's role as a gateway for cross-border connectivity. Kositany highlighted plans to establish an immigration office at the airstrip to facilitate travel between Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and the Masaai Mara tourism circuit. This initiative aims to boost tourism, trade, and regional integration.
Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko emphasized that the airstrip's upgrade will increase air traffic, bolster the county's tourism sector, and create additional job opportunities for the local community.
