Nairobi: The Deputy Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Paul Ndemo, has presided over the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed chairpersons and members of key tribunals, including the Sports Disputes Tribunal, Tax Appeals Tribunal, and Water Tribunal. The event, held in Nairobi, marks the official induction of these appointees into the Judiciary’s arms tasked with resolving disputes in specialized sectors.
According to Kenya News Agency, Ndemo addressed the new tribunal officials shortly after their oaths, congratulating them on their appointments and welcoming first-time members. He emphasized that the ceremony was not merely a formality but a solemn pledge of allegiance to the Judiciary and the principles governing judicial authority in Kenya. Ndemo highlighted the responsibility of tribunal members to exercise delegated judicial authority on behalf of the Kenyan people.
Ndemo pointed out the existing trust deficit in public service, urging the new tribunal members to restore public trust through integrity and credible service. He criticized the common perception that officials often disregard their oath of office, urging them to commit to the rule of law, ethics, and transparency.
Highlighting the unique role of tribunals, Ndemo noted that they offer practical, swift, and less technical resolutions to disputes, differing from the mainstream court system. He emphasized the centrality of each tribunal to public service, stressing the need for real and practical solutions to real-life disputes.
Specific attention was given to the Water Tribunal, where Ndemo reiterated the phrase “water is life” and expressed gratitude to the Judicial Service Commission for filling long-vacant positions. The tribunal is expected to handle an initial caseload of at least 65 matters. He also emphasized the Tax Appeals Tribunal’s role in safeguarding taxpayer rights and ensuring equity in the tax regime.
Ndemo congratulated the members of the Sports Disputes Tribunal, underscoring their responsibility in delivering justice within the sports sector. He reminded the new appointees that as judicial officers, their conduct must foster public confidence in the justice system. The Judiciary’s support through the Office of the Registrar of Tribunals was reaffirmed, with a commitment to building efficient and responsive tribunals.
The ceremony marked a significant step in strengthening Kenya’s tribunal system, serving as a crucial mechanism for accessible, timely, and specialized dispute resolution outside the mainstream court structure.
