Journalist Donald Wendpouiré Nikiéma Laid to Rest in Goundrin Cemetery Amidst Mourning

Ouagadougou: The press community in Burkina Faso mourned the loss of esteemed journalist Donald Wendpouiré Nikiéma, who passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024. Nikiéma, a key figure at Editions Sidwaya, was laid to rest at the Goundrin cemetery on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, in the presence of family, colleagues, and friends. According to Burkina Information Agency, the news of Nikiéma's passing spread rapidly on social media, casting a pall over the editorial offices of Editions Sidwaya and beyond. On the day of his funeral, mourners gathered at various locations, including the morgue, the family courtyard, and the church, before paying their final respects at the cemetery. The somber ceremony was marked by a funeral oration delivered by Nongdo Belem, representing the Minister of State, Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, and other dignitaries. Nikiéma, born on July 15, 1976, in Ouagadougou, joined the civil service on July 18, 2012, and began his tenure at Editions Sidwaya on December 17 , 2012. His career at the newspaper saw him rise from an agent to head of the regional service of North Ouahigouya, and most recently, to deputy head of the society and culture desk. Known for his affable nature and dedication, Nikiéma was a valued member of the Sidwaya team, remembered for his initiative and constant availability. His colleagues and superiors described him as an irreplaceable part of the "Common House," lauding his ability to spread good humor and his commitment during crucial times for the newspaper. The representative from Sidwaya expressed the profound loss felt by the organization and the hope that Nikiéma's spirit would continue to guide them in future challenges. Nikiéma is survived by his widow and three children, leaving behind a void in both his professional and personal circles.
