Josina Machel Hospital Achieves Over 3,000 Surgeries Milestone in 2025

Luanda: Josina Machel Hospital performed over 3,300 surgeries from January to November 2025, announced the hospital's general director, Carlos Zeca, on Friday.

According to Angola Press News Agency, more than 100 surgeons specializing in general surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, maxillofacial surgery, and otorhinolaryngology were involved in the process. Carlos Zeca emphasized that this achievement showcases the institution's increased care capacity and signifies a year of hard work that exceeded expectations set in 2024. The previous year witnessed improvements in medical and pharmaceutical care, alongside a reduction in the hospital's mortality rate.

Zeca remarked on the economic challenges faced during the year but noted the positive outcome of no patients missing scheduled surgeries. He highlighted an increase in cases related to traffic accidents, strokes, and malaria, with 205 malaria cases reported, a figure deemed high.

He also mentioned a protocol in place for stroke patients, enabling their referral to the Pedro Maria Tonha "Pedal©" Hospital Complex in under five hours for effective treatment. The Josina Machel Hospital, formerly known as the Maria Pia Hospital, currently employs 1,558 staff members.
