Joseph Ki-Zerbo University Hosts Second Edition of ’15 Minutes of Sociology’ Competition

Ouagadougou: The Sociology Club of Joseph Ki-Zerbo University launched the second edition of its scientific debate competition, "15 Minutes of Sociology," in Ouagadougou. The event aims to promote academic excellence, scientific communication, and student reflection on societal issues through social science approaches.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Boukary Sawadogo, who is in charge of academic activities at the Sociology Club, stated that the competition seeks to contribute to utilizing sociology for the nation's benefit by encouraging students to enhance their analytical and scientific argumentation skills. More than a hundred candidates from various regions of the country are expected to participate.

During the event, Professor Alkassoum Maiga, a full professor of sociology at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University, delivered a presentation on the sociologist's role in managing economic, environmental, diplomatic, and security crises. He noted that sociologists are often misunderstood by both the public and decision-makers, explaining that there is a dual expectation and apprehension towards their work.

Dr. Evariste Dakoure, Vice-Rector of Aube-Nouvelle University and representative of the event's sponsor, expressed support for the initiative, deeming it beneficial for enabling candidates to enhance their critical thinking on social issues. He emphasized the need to encourage Burkinabe youth to engage deeply with societal challenges.

Candidate Ouedraogo Aicha, a sociology student, shared that the conference helped her deepen her knowledge, which she plans to apply during the competition. The event also aims to bolster students' interest in researching and analyzing social phenomena.
