Luanda: The President of the Republic, Joo Louren§o, assessed the progress of the construction of the future University Hospital of Luanda, an infrastructure under construction in the Camama-Sapu area, intended to strengthen the healthcare, academic, and scientific capacity of the health sector in the country.
According to Angola Press News Agency, during the inspection visit, the Head of State, accompanied by the Minister of Health, Slvia Lutucuta, and other members of the Executive, received technical information on the progress of the project, whose physical execution has reached approximately 30 percent. This marks the President's second visit to the site, following the visit made in August 2025, as part of the monitoring of the main strategic projects in the social sector.
Integrated into the new campus of Agostinho Neto University (UAN), in the so-called Vila Rubra, the future University Hospital of Luanda was designed to concentrate, in a single structure, the functions of healthcare, academia, science, and specialized training. The project will occupy an area of approximately 40,000 square meters, of which 18,100 correspond to the built area, distributed across several interconnected blocks.
The hospital will have a capacity for 144 inpatient beds, including intensive care, isolation, emergency, operating room, imaging, clinical laboratory, outpatient clinics, pharmacy, morgue, and an integrated hospital waste treatment system. Among the main technical indicators are 12 intensive care beds, 20 isolation beds, and a morgue equipped with 18 cold storage chambers, in addition to specialized departments for non-invasive diagnosis, biomedical workshops, and a hospital technical center.
The project, which began in November 2024, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Budgeted at approximately 99 million US dollars, it is being executed by the Swiss company Mitrelli Group. The hospital will be linked to the Faculty of Medicine of the public Agostinho Neto University and will also function as a teaching hospital, biomedical research center, medical residency platform, and postgraduate training space.
With this infrastructure, the Executive aims to strengthen the practical training of Angolan professionals in medicine, nursing, surgery, clinical analysis, imaging, and public health to reduce external dependence in terms of medical specialization. The architectural concept includes six large structural volumes, hanging gardens, internal courtyards, and differentiated technical circuits, inspired by contemporary models of European university hospitals.
In addition to the hospital component, the project integrates solutions geared towards sustainability and functionality, including independent technical corridors, biological waste management systems, natural ventilation, and the possibility of modular expansion. Industry experts believe that the Luanda University Hospital could establish itself as the country's main university health unit and a center of reference for medical research in Southern Africa.
