Jilore: Residents of Jilore location in Malindi, Kilifi County are calling on the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) to expedite the compensation process for the use of their land for high voltage electric power transmission lines. The community, affected by the installation that hinders development on their properties, has been waiting over six years for compensation following a valuation conducted in 2019. According to Kenya News Agency, the residents expressed their grievances in Sosoni village, highlighting the urgent need for compensation to facilitate their relocation and make room for the safety-required transmission lines. Edward Kingi, a local resident, noted that more than 2,000 households are enduring the impact of the transmission line stretching from the Kakuyuni sub-station to Weru in Jilore ward. The delay in compensation has left many unable to improve or rebuild their homes, and some, like Riziki Loda, have seen their homes and essential structures like pit latrines collapse. " We are forced to live and manage our basic needs in the open, increasing our exposure to health risks," Loda added. The affected community members argue that the compensation amount determined in 2019 might no longer reflect the current land values, which have significantly increased, potentially leaving them unable to secure alternative land. Residents like Janet Dama Baya and David Mwagandi Charo have expressed their frustration over what they describe as "empty promises" from KETRACO and are calling for immediate action from local political leaders. Mumba Mwagandi Ngala, reflecting on the initial promises made by KETRACO, described the situation as a "curse," with unfulfilled commitments significantly affecting their lives. Daniel Nzai, a member of the local compensation committee, also shared the strain on committee members who are being blamed by the community for delays in payments. As the residents addressed the press, KETRACO representatives were seen dropping off a local administrator before leavi ng the scene without addressing the media.
