Isiolo:In a bid to enhance local economic growth and environmental conservation, Isiolo Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Patrick Musango has encouraged women and youth groups to establish commercial tree nurseries. He specifically emphasized the utilization of free rainwater to initiate these tree nursery projects, which would especially be beneficial during the rainy season due to increased tree prices.
As reported by the Kenya News Agency, Mr. Musango highlighted the county's goal of planting two million trees to counteract the effects of desertification in the region's lowlands. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Mzalendo Community Based Organization for their donation of tree seedlings and urged them to capitalize on the current rains to intensify tree planting.
Additionally, the Deputy County Commissioner instructed department heads to integrate at least 20 tree seedlings within their office premises. This directive aims to beautify these areas while also increasing tree coverage in public institutions. Moreover, he appealed to non-governmental organizations in the county to prioritize tree planting in their agendas.
Speaking for the Mzalendo CBO, treasurer Ms. Emily Mutua expressed the organization's initiative to focus on tree planting in government compounds, citing the heightened security in such areas. She revealed that they have initiated a 20,000 seedlings nursery and have plans to expand this to 100,000 seedlings by the end of the current year.
