Iraqi President and UN Envoy Discuss Future Cooperation Amidst Upcoming UNAMI Withdrawal

Baghdad: Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid met with the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Mohamed al-Hassan, to discuss avenues for bilateral cooperation.

According to Namibia Press Agency, their discussions centered around the political and developmental aspects of Iraq, emphasizing the UN’s role in supporting Iraq’s stability, democratic progress, and sustainable growth. The Iraqi presidency highlighted the importance of enhancing coordination to advance peace, prosperity, and long-term development.

Al-Hassan, who leads the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting Iraq across various sectors. He emphasized the UN’s dedication to maintaining close cooperation to advance Iraq’s development goals, while actively reinforcing stability and promoting sustainable progress.

A UN Security Council resolution issued in May 2024 mandates the withdrawal of UNAMI from Iraq by December 31, following a request from the Iraqi government.
