IRAF Plants 200 Trees in Zondoma Village to Promote Environmental Sustainability and Women’s Empowerment

Bascorma, Zondoma — The Initiative Association for the Resilience and Empowerment of Rural Women (IRAF) has taken significant strides in environmental conservation by planting 200 trees at the public primary school B in Bascorma, a village in the commune of Tougo, province of Zondoma, on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

According to Burkina Information Agency, president of IRAF, the planting included a variety of neem, eucalyptus, mango trees, and 100 baobabs specifically intended for women. This reforestation effort is part of IRAF’s broader objective to create a suitable working environment for students and teachers while also combating desertification in the region. “The various activities are part of a broader vision of improving the living conditions of populations, by responding to immediate needs,” Ouédraogo stated.

In addition to the reforestation project, IRAF also conducted training for 150 women on how to manufacture liquid soap and educated 300 people about the dangers of dengue and malaria, which pose significant public health risks in the area. These initiatives are designed to enhance the socio-economic status of rural women and contribute to their resilience.

IRAF has ambitious plans to plant a total of 1,000 trees in Bascorma by 2027, including 300 baobabs and 200 fruit trees, as part of their commitment to ensuring a resilient and sustainable future for the entire municipality.
