International Russian Language Day Celebrated at Saint-Anatole School Group in Nioryida

Zoundwogo: The Russian-Burkinabe Association 'African Initiative', in collaboration with the Saint-Anatole School Group of Nioryida, celebrated the International Day of the Russian Language on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The event featured a series of educational and cultural activities to promote the Russian language and culture among students.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the celebration aimed to foster cultural openness among young Burkinabe and strengthen educational and linguistic cooperation between Burkina Faso and the Russian Federation. Soumaila Azenwo Ayo, president of the Russo-Burkinabe African Initiative Association, noted the significance of choosing the Saint-Anatole School Group due to its incorporation of Russian language classes into its curriculum.

"We chose this school because it is one of the few high schools where students benefit from three hours of Russian language classes per week. This is a real innovation," Ayo explained, emphasizing the importance of the Russian language as a tool for knowledge and opportunities for students planning to study in Russia.

Ayo highlighted that proficiency in Russian offers students a head start in their studies, eliminating the need for a year dedicated solely to language learning upon arrival in Russia. He also acknowledged ongoing reforms in the Burkinabe education system to reintegrate the Russian language into the curriculum.

Sr Sidiki, a Russian teacher at Saint-Anatole School Group, observed an increasing enthusiasm among students for learning Russian. "Many students are motivated and seriously committed to learning Russian. Through this, they also discover Russian culture," he stated. Sidiki explained that students begin with the Russian alphabet and gradually progress to writing, pronunciation, and basic communication.

He advocated for enhanced cultural and educational cooperation between Burkina Faso and Russia to expand training opportunities for Burkinabe students. Yembi Rodrigue Simpor, the headmaster of the school group, representing the founder, praised the initiative for contributing to the cultural openness of learners and preparing them for a connected world through foreign language acquisition.
