Inmate in Otavi Police Custody Dies by Alleged Suicide; Otjiwarongo Woman Stabbed in Separate Incident

Otavi — A 32-year-old man detained on stock theft charges allegedly committed suicide in the Otavi police holding cells on Saturday morning. He was identified by relatives on Monday as Hiyana Luwa.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Namibian Police Force crime investigations coordinator in the Otjozondjupa Region, Luwa was arrested on Friday at 4:00 PM and allegedly hanged himself using a blanket in his cell early Saturday morning. "His body was found at about 4:30 AM on Saturday morning by some members of NamPol at Otavi," Nawa reported. Luwa had been arrested after being found in possession of meat from a stolen cow. No suicide note was found at the scene, and authorities currently do not suspect foul play.

In a separate and unrelated incident in Otjiwarongo, a 30-year-old woman, identified as Uarotua Kangombe, succumbed to injuries after being stabbed early Sunday morning. Kangombe was attacked by thieves demanding her cellphone in the Heroes Park residential area. "She was allegedly attacked on one of the three-way gravel road stops of the residential area at about 5:30 AM on Sunday. She died at 7:00 AM in the Otjiwarongo State Hospital," added Nawa. A medical doctor noted a deep wound in her left armpit. Residents reported hearing screams for help shortly before she was found injured.

Authorities have not yet identified suspects in Kangombe's attack. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
