OTAVI — A 32-year-old Namibian man, arrested on charges of stock theft, allegedly committed suicide in a police holding cell in Otavi on Saturday, less than 24 hours after his arrest.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the head of community affairs for the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, the deceased was found early Saturday morning. “His body was discovered at about 04:30 AM by some members of NamPol,” Mbeha stated in an interview with Nampa. The man, whose name has not been released pending notification of his next of kin, reportedly used a piece of blanket to hang himself from the burglar door of the cell.
The inmate was taken into custody on Friday at 16:00 after being found in possession of meat from a stolen cow. No suicide note was located at the scene, and authorities currently do not suspect foul play.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is ongoing.
