Banfora: INERA has extended an invitation to rice farmers to utilize the Farakoba rice 19 (FKR 19) seeds, which are known for their high yield. These seeds are currently being produced at the National Institute of Environment and Agricultural Research (INERA) station in Banfora, a facility renowned for its production of basic seeds for seed producers.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Salam Kiémdé, the head of the scientific and technical department at INERA, stated that FKR 19 was developed by INERA researchers following all required protocols to produce pre-base seeds. Kiémdé highlighted that this particular rice variety can yield substantial quantities if the technical guidelines and expert recommendations are adhered to.
Kiémdé assured that the rice production process is meticulously supervised, from sowing to certification by ministry inspectors, inclusive of field visits, harvesting, packaging, and laboratory analysis. The yield for FKR 19 varies between 3 to 4 tonnes per hectare for basic seed
s and 5 to 6 tonnes per hectare for certified seeds, as per the technical department head’s statement.
He further explained that INERA is committed to maintaining the quality of its seeds, which in turn boosts yields, benefiting the agricultural community. Kiémdé encouraged seed producers to engage with INERA for access to high-quality basic seeds. The FKR 19, with a growth cycle of 105 days, is particularly popular in the South-Central and Eastern regions due to its productivity.
The senior research technician’s remarks were made during a visit to a mature rice plot in Kiribina, Banfora, which was part of a second press caravan organized by the ministry responsible for research. This initiative is designed to give journalists insight into the work of researchers and educators. Previous field trips were held in September 2024 to various research stations and universities.
Additionally, the INERA Banfora station produces basic seeds for other crops such as soybeans, corn, and sesame.
