CAIRO - A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Southeast Sulawesi province in Indonesia on Tuesday afternoon, according to the country’s meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency. The earthquake occurred deep beneath the seabed and did not trigger any significant tsunamis or damage.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the seismic event was recorded at 4:28 p.m. Jakarta time (0928 GMT), with the epicenter located 186 kilometers southwest of Wakatobi regency at a depth of 631 kilometers. Despite the significant magnitude, the depth of the quake was instrumental in preventing the generation of large waves, and consequently, no tsunami warning was issued.
Abdul Muhari, spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, confirmed that there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties following the earthquake. Indonesia, which lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire and hosts 127 active volcanoes, is no stranger to seismic activities, making its infrastructure and response systems crucially adaptive to such natural events.
