Indonesia’s Lewotobi Laki Laki Volcano Eruption Leads to Airport Closures

Flores, Indonesia—The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on Flores Island erupted on Tuesday morning, leading to the temporary closure of local airports due to safety concerns from the volcanic ash.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that the volcano, which reaches approximately 1,980 meters above sea level, expelled ash up to 400 meters above its peak at around 8:00 local time. Currently positioned at Level 3, the second-highest in the country's four-tiered volcano danger system, Lewotobi Laki-Laki has experienced a total of six eruptions over the past week. As a result of the increased volcanic activity, airports in the nearby cities of Ende and Maumere have been closed.

The PVMBG has issued a warning, advising the public to avoid any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption's center to ensure safety amidst the ongoing geological disturbances.
