Illegal Mining Operation in Polokwane Leads to Arrest and Equipment Seizure

Polokwane, South Africa – An 18-year-old suspect was arrested on Thursday, November 9, 2023, for possession of suspected precious minerals and contravention of the Immigration Act, following a planned illicit mining operation in Myakayaka village, Maake policing precinct in Mopani District.

According to South Africa Police Service, The operation was conducted by the Mopani District Illegal Mining Task Team, K9 Unit, and Limpopo Provincial Organized Crime Unit. The suspect was found in possession of a bag full of suspected minerals and was immediately taken into custody.

Several pieces of equipment used in illicit mining were confiscated during the operation, including pendukas, mottos, spades, bags of suspected precious metals, and various other tools. The suspect is set to appear before Lenyenye Magistrate’s Court on Monday, November 13, 2023, facing charges related to the possession of precious minerals and immigration violations.

The police continue their investigations into the broader aspects of this illicit mining operation.
