Ikanga Airstrip Set for December Launch After KAA Approval

NAIROBI – The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has completed its inspection of the Ikanga Airstrip, ensuring all security and structural compliance measures are in place for its upcoming launch on December 8th. Ken Ngaina, KAA’s security manager, expressed satisfaction with the airstrip’s infrastructure and security standards, committing to operational readiness by the end of December.

According to Kenya News Agency, Steven Njiru, KAA’s engineer, recommended final touches, including the renovation of the passengers’ waiting bay, restrooms, and installation of a perimeter fence for enhanced safety and security. These improvements are expected to be completed in time for the airstrip’s opening, allowing for the first flights to land and take off.

Edward Lenjo, Taita Taveta County’s Trade Department Programmes Officer, lauded the KAA’s efforts to operationalize the airstrip swiftly. He highlighted the potential benefits to the region, including increased tourist inflow and the development of support businesses. The Ikanga Airstrip, which has been under development for several years, is poised to unlock the untapped tourism potential of Taita Taveta County, particularly with the proximity of Tsavo East and Tsavo West national parks.
