Hyena Attack Injures Three in Narok North Sub-County

Limanet – In the Limanet area of Narok North Sub-County, three people have sustained injuries following an attack by a hyena. The incident was confirmed by John Momanyi, the Narok central police Commander, who reported that the attack occurred near Narok Town.

According to Kenya News Agency, the attack took place in the early hours of Wednesday at around 3 a.m. A family in the area was invaded by a hyena, resulting in injuries to two adults and an 11-year-old boy. Momanyi appealed to residents to report such wildlife encounters to authorities instead of taking matters into their own hands. He also mentioned that the injured individuals were taken to Narok Referral Hospital for treatment and that the hyena was killed by the residents.

Narok County, known for its wildlife and tourist attractions, often experiences conflicts between humans and wildlife. Momanyi urged residents to refrain from harming wildlife despite these conflicts.

Mpantin’ga Mondoi, one of the victims, recounted the ordeal, stating that the hyena attacked their livestock, prompting him to intervene. During the struggle to protect his cows and sheep, Mondoi was bitten on the leg. His brother and another family member, who came to his aid, were also attacked and injured by the hyena.

Jackson Napati, the village elder, reported that the hyena killed two cows, three donkeys, and two sheep, while leaving others injured. Napati called on the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) to take measures to relocate the wildlife in order to prevent further incidents and losses.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of human-wildlife conflict in areas where communities live in close proximity to wildlife habitats.
