CHANGSHA: The 101-year-old Hunan Institute of Arts, located in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province in southern China, has recently introduced a specialized department dedicated to the restoration of damaged art objects. On Monday, the institute welcomed a delegation of Burkinabe journalists to its premises, showcasing its commitment to preserving ancient art.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Hunan Professional Institute of Arts is currently training 160 students from various levels to become skilled restorers capable of repairing chipped or broken art objects. This faculty, the latest addition to the institute founded in 1923, aims to meet the growing need for art restoration services in China.
The Burkinabe delegation, led by Bakary Koné, Chargé de mission of the Ministry in charge of Communication, Culture, Arts, and Tourism, explored the restoration training room dedicated to wooden objects. They also visited an exhibition room displaying both damaged and restored items, including statuet
tes, money notes, porcelain, masks, and paintings.
Ms. Xin Jiang, a leader at the faculty, explained that the new department was established in response to demand. She emphasized that the restoration work aims to preserve the historical and aesthetic values of the objects, marking a pioneering effort for an institute in China.
The group also toured a mask restoration workshop featuring masks from Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as esoteric objects and exotic animals. In another workshop, students were observed working on the restoration and creation of musical instruments, with a focus on old pianos.
The visit extended to the Faculty of Performing Arts, where traditional Chinese dance rehearsals were underway alongside contemporary dance practices. This faculty offers students a glimpse into operatic performances, showcasing a wide array of masks, costumes, and images from memorable stage shows.
Additionally, the institute houses a faculty specializing in the conception and design of characters, produc

Concluding the visit, the delegation toured the institute’s history museum, which features photos of founders, teachers, and notable alumni, along with extensive literature documenting the institute’s rich legacy.
Bakary Koné expressed gratitude towards the officials of the Hunan Professional Arts Institute for their professionalism and hospitality. The Burkinabe delegation is participating in a three-week training course in Hunan, organized from October 11 to 31, 2024, for media managers from Burkina Faso.
