Hula Projects Boost in Grain Production with North-South Electrification Interconnection

Lubango: The governor of southern Huila province, Nuno Mahapi, stated in Monda, Lubango, that with the integration of the north-south electrification system, the province is set to make substantial advancements in its grain production capacity.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Governor Mahapi, during a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Isaac dos Anjos, emphasized the strategic importance of the Maize Triangle region, which encompasses Matala, Quipungo, Chicomba, Caluquembe, and Caconda. The planned Gove-Matala line, along with the construction of two substations, is expected to significantly enhance agricultural output in the area.

Governor Mahapi highlighted recent positive trends in family farming within the province, underscoring the necessity for continued support. This includes procuring more farming equipment that families and cooperatives can easily access. However, he expressed concerns regarding meat production, particularly poultry, cattle, goats, and cows, attributing the challenges to a dysfunctional supply chain, lacking essential inputs.

Furthermore, Governor Mahapi noted the construction of sanitary infrastructures by municipal administrations to improve livestock health as part of the Integrated Programme for Local Development and the Fight against Poverty. He advocated for better utilization of land along irrigation canals, such as the Vila Branca canal in Caluquembe, to address food chain deficiencies within the province.

Minister Isaac dos Anjos's visit to Hula aims to promote the cultivation of sorghum, millet, and other short-cycle crops, aligning with the province's agricultural development goals.
