Houet: 1,119 Children Protected Against Seasonal Malaria in Satiri

Houet: A total of 1,119 children aged 3 to 59 months benefited from the first phase of the seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) campaign at the Satiri Health and Social Promotion Center (CSPS), in the L©na health district. Launched on June 25, 2026, the day after a training session for community distributors (CDs), this campaign was coupled with several public health interventions, including screening for malnutrition, searching for edema, identifying under-vaccinated children or children who have not received any doses of vaccine (zero dose), as well as raising awareness among the population about the fight against malaria through the destruction of larval habitats.

According to Burkina Information Agency, for four days, community distributors went door-to-door to administer preventive treatment to eligible children, screen for possible cases of malnutrition, and raise awareness among households about good prevention practices, including the elimination of stagnant water that promotes the proliferation of mosquitoes.

Djeneba Traor©, a mother of several children, welcomed this government initiative. She stated that since her children have been regularly receiving seasonal malaria chemoprevention, they no longer suffer from malaria. She encouraged other parents to follow the recommendations of health workers and to have their children participate in this preventative campaign.

Dabou Bou©, the head nurse at the Satiri health center, praised the results achieved thanks to the commitment of the community distributors. He expressed his gratitude to the community health workers, village elders, parents of children, local authorities, and the government for their contribution to the success of the operation. He also urged the population to join the CPS (Permanent Sanitary Care Program) en masse, to intensify efforts to destroy mosquito breeding sites, and to construct pits to collect wastewater from showers in order to limit mosquito proliferation. He reiterated that children who correctly follow preventive treatment receive effective protection against malaria during the peak transmission season.

The second round of the campaign is planned for next month to consolidate the protection of children against malaria throughout the high transmission season.
